Monday 10th February 7.30 pm
Peter Driver an artist and ornithologist who has lived in Mortimer for 26 years, will be giving a talk about his book A Walk for Stanley. The book recounts Peter's experience of a three-day walk from the Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham to the Sandham Memorial Chapel, Burghclere, where Spencer's Great War memorial paintings are displayed. It brings together Peter's sketches, woodcut prints, photographs, poetry and prose in a beautifully presented record of the project.
Peter will also tell us about his current book Widdershins Walk: round the edge of Reading, due for publication this year. The book describes a series of walks conducted with fellow artist and naturalist Geoff Sawers to find their way, through the seasons of 2024, around the outer edges of Reading. Along the way they discuss the local history, natural history, topology and toponymy of these 'edge places'. The book will be richly illustrated with paintings, drawings, woodcuts and photographs and includes such a wide range of reflections and observations that it should include something for everyone.
We look forward to seeing you there.
